NATIONAL DRUG TAKE BACK DAY IS OCTOBER 24, 2020

(October 9, 2020, Salisbury, MD) The National Prescription Drug Take Back Day addresses a crucial public safety and public health issue. According to the 2018 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 9.9 million Americans misused controlled prescription drugs. The study shows that a majority of abused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet.

Take Back Day events provide an opportunity for Americans to prevent drug addiction and overdose deaths.  Too often, unused prescription drugs find their way into the wrong hands. That’s dangerous and often tragic.  This event provides the opportunity to dispose of unused/expired prescription medications in a safe manner across the country. In 2019, 4,896 law enforcement agencies participated with 6,174 collection sites, and 882,919 pounds/441.5 tons were collected.

According to the American Medical Association, there has been an increase in opioid and other drug related overdoses during COVID-19, making it even more important to dispose of unused/expired medications properly.
