WICOMICO COUNTY GOVERNMENT HOSTS WICOMICO GOES PURPLE FOOD DRIVE

(October 9, 2020, Salisbury, MD) September was National Recovery Month and in recognition of this, the government sector of the Wicomico Goes Purple Substance Misuse Awareness campaign hosted a month-long Food Drive for Recovery. Donations of non-perishable food items were collected all month long with residents dropping off their donations at one of four drop-off locations throughout the county; the Wicomico Youth and Civic Center, Government Office Building, Recovery Resource Center, and Asbury Church.

After collecting the donations, several committee members came together to sort the food which had filled over 30 large cardboard boxes. All donations were distributed among the seven organizations within Wicomico County that operate recovery and/or transitional housing, and provide assistance to individuals beginning their recovery journey. “Here at Wicomico Goes Purple, we believe it is just as important to recognize and support folks in recovery as it is to raise awareness about substance misuse. Making the choice to enter recovery is tough and by hosting this food drive we wanted to be able to alleviate just a small need that those in the early stages of recovery may be experiencing,” said Wicomico County Opioid Coordinator, Christina Bowie-Simpson.

If you or someone you love is struggling with substance misuse, there are resources available to assist in the journey to recovery. Call (443) 783-6875 or visit the Wicomico County Safe Station 24/7 located at 726 S. Salisbury Blvd, Salisbury, MD 21804.

The Wicomico County Health Department also offers FREE Naloxone (Narcan) trainings, where community members can learn how to save a life by using this opioid overdose reversal medication. For more information on Naloxone trainings and other resources, call (410) 543-6981, visit the Wicomico County Health Department’s website at www.wicomicohealth.org or connect with us on Facebook, Instagram (WicomicoHealth) or Twitter (@WicomicoHealth).
