BOOSTERS NOW AVAILABLE FOR MODERNA AND JOHNSON & JOHNSON

(October 22, 2021, Salisbury, MD) Earlier this week, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved boosters for the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson (J&J) COVID-19 vaccines. The Wicomico County Health Department will start administering Moderna and J&J boosters on Monday, October 25, 2021. The health department will continue to provide initial doses of the vaccines and Pfizer boosters as well.  The FDA also approved “mix and match” boosters.

A booster dose is an additional dose of a vaccine given after the protection provided by the original shot(s) has begun to decrease over time.  Typically, you would get a booster after the immunity for the initial dose(s) naturally starts to wane. The booster is designed to help people maintain their level of immunity for longer.

J&J BOOSTER

Mix and Match Booster Doses

The FDA also approved “mix and match” COVID-19 boosters meaning that a single dose of any of the available COVID-19 vaccines may be administered as a heterologous (“mix and match”) booster dose following the completion of primary vaccination with a different available COVID-19 vaccine. The eligible populations and dosing interval for a “mix and match” booster dose are the same as those authorized for a booster dose of the vaccine used for the primary vaccination.
