YASHVIR SANGWAN HONORED AS 2021 OUTSTANDING PUBLIC HEALTH LEADER

(April 6, 2022 Salisbury, Maryland) The Wicomico County Health Department recognized Dr. Yashvir Sangwan from TidalHealth Peninsula Regional as the 2021 Outstanding Public Health Leader for Wicomico County during the award ceremony held on April 5, 2022 at the Wicomico Youth and Civic Center. The 25th annual award ceremony was held in recognition of National Public Health Week (April 4-10, 2022).

Below is a timeline of Dr. Sangwan’s continuous achievements in advancing medicine:

  • 2011: Joined TidalHealth and introduced various innovative airway, lung, and pleural procedures.
  • 2013: Created a Point-of-Care Ultrasound training program and implemented an IV access program. He then taught tracheostomy procedures at the University of Maryland.
  • 2016: Noted as the first Interventional Pulmonology clinical instructor and fellow at the University of Maryland. While at the University of Maryland, he developed new pleural disease protocols which were all presented at the international AABIP conference.
  • 2020-2022: He became the medical director of the COVID ICU and played a crucial role in developing ventilator and management protocols. He trained and implemented several protocols during the COVID surge in 2020. He continued to research and published studies with NIH.

Dr. Sangwan has been recognized several times in regards to his new inventions in the medical field as well as training and educating his peers. He continues to serve the community of Wicomico by being noted for mentoring students and hospitalists to advance in their careers. Currently, he is implementing a program to enhance psychomotor skills, situational awareness and protocol adherence using transferrable training techniques from other high-risk fields like maritime and aviation. He is also interested in mentoring local pre-med and high school biomed students towards achieving their dreams. He is now part of TidalHealth’s historic residency program in internal medicine and has begun the selection process.

              In addition to the Outstanding Public Health Leader award, four Health Officer’s Awards of Excellence were presented to the following individuals:

  • David Fitzgerald from Wicomico County Department of Emergency Services for 25 years of service to the residents of Wicomico County through Animal Control, Risk Management, COVID-19 Operations, and Opioid intervention.
  • Leslie Brown, President & Chief Executive Officer at Hudson Behavioral Health, for efforts to increase access to recovery services on the lower eastern shore, allowing many to break free from drug and alcohol addiction to achieve long term recovery.
  • Stephanie Willey, General Sales Manager at 47ABC-WMDT-Marquee Broadcasting, for 20 years of supporting health causes affecting children, adults and seniors. Also for serving as chair for Wicomico County Go Purple initiatives for opioid misuse awareness. 
  • Michelle Ennis, Executive Director of Tri Community Mediation, for leadership in outreach to vulnerable populations and providing them with needed resources and vaccinations during the COVID-19 pandemic as well as making connections to services.
