WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY MAY 31, 2022

(May 31, 2022 Salisbury, MD) – Every year on the 31st of May, the World Health Organization (WHO) sponsors World No Tobacco Day to encourage people to quit smoking tobacco for 24 hours or as the start of a long-term quit attempt. This year’s theme is “Protect the Environment”, by raising awareness among the public on the environmental impact of tobacco from cultivation, production, distribution and waste. It will give tobacco users one extra reason to quit. The World Health Organization states, tobacco threat to our environment poisons wildlife, ignites destructive deadly fires, damages habitat, landscapes, ecosystems and consumes tax dollars for clean-up and disposal. Growing and manufacturing tobacco poisons our water, soil, beaches, and city streets with chemicals, toxic waste, cigarette butts and e-cigarettes. ash.org/pollution.

Quit tobacco to save our planet. The harmful impact of the tobacco industry on the environment is vast and growing adding unnecessary pressure to our planet’s already scarce resources. According to the Federal Trade Commission, tobacco companies spent more than $8 billion in 2018 on advertising and promotion.

In recognition of World No Tobacco Day, the Wicomico County Health Department will be distributing quit kits. They have items to keep the mouth, hands and brain busy, and to relieve stress.  Pick up a quit kit for yourself or someone you care about.

The kits include:
