Dr. JAMES COCKEY RETIRING AND DR. CALIXTE TAKING OVER AS MEDICAL DIRECTOR

(September 27, 2023, Salisbury, MD) The Wicomico County Health Department (WiCHD), a division of the Maryland Department of Health, announces the retirement of James Cockey, M.D. Following Dr. Cockey’s retirement on September 29th, Dr. Cynthia Calixte will assume his role and duties within the health department.

Since 1983, Dr. Cockey has worked as a clinician and consultant for WiCHD and later became its medical director in 2008. In addition to WiCHD, Dr. Cockey also served Somerset and Worcester County Health Departments throughout the years. Dr. Cockey played an instrumental role in establishing the Hub and Spoke program, a tri-county program that connected local healthcare providers to promote and support Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) in primary care offices. He filled an important need as a Civil Surgeon for our area, providing required immigration examinations.

“We are pleased to announce Dr. Cynthia Calixte as our Medical Director”, stated Matthew McConaughey, Health Officer for Wicomico County “Dr. Calixte will provide medical oversight for Health Department clinical operations, continuing the commitment to our community that Dr. James Cockey has provided since 2008.” WiCHD wishes to thank Dr. James Cockey for his long standing service to the residents of Wicomico County. His years of service demonstrate his dedication to public health and our entire community. We wish him many years of enjoyment and good health following his retirement on Friday, September 29, 2023.
