MARCH 18TH IS KICK BUTTS DAY/TAKE DOWN TOBACCO DAY

(March 17, 2020, Salisbury, MD) This year is the 25th Kick Butts Day, a national day of activism that empowers youth to stand out, speak up and seize control against Big Tobacco. Effective immediately, the effort is now called Take Down Tobacco, a 365-day effort, with March 18th as the Take Down Tobacco National Day of Action. The goals of the Take Down Tobacco campaign are to:

  • Raise awareness of the problem of tobacco use in their community
  • Encourage youth to reject the tobacco industry’s deceptive marketing and stay tobacco-free
  • Urge elected officials to take action to protect kids from tobacco

Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, many events planned in schools and communities across the United States and around the world have been cancelled. However, you can still use this observance as a way to find out about the newest tobacco-related issue affecting youth, e-cigarettes. The new website features:

  • E-cigarette information for parents
  • A free online advocacy training
  • Monthly webinars
  • Downloadable materials such as fact sheets and tool kits
  • A “power wall” where you can write your reason for taking down tobacco

Organized by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, Kick Butts Day has helped bring down the youth smoking rates to an all-time low, and Take Down Tobacco will work to do the same with e-cigarettes. It is important to bring awareness to the dangers of electronic cigarettes and marketing strategies for these products that can still contain addictive and dangerous chemicals that can harm youth.
