As we approach May, Mental Health Awareness Month, we need to pause,  reflect and recognize a difficult truth: More than one in five Americans lives with a mental health condition, according to the National Institute of Mental Health.  Suicide touches whole communities: anyone, anywhere, at any time. It is not inevitable, but there is hope. Every 11 minutes someone dies from suicide according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  Each person who dies by suicide leaves behind someone who knew them, along with the impact of suicide and the grief that follows.  We all have a role to play in preventing suicide and it begins with a simple conversation.  Are you ok? Are you struggling with feelings of suicide? Are you considering suicide? You can read more about this at:  https://www.samhsa.gov/suicide

You don’t have to be suicidal or in crisis to call the 988 Suicide/Crisis Lifeline. They are available to listen and assist regarding many things: substance abuse, economic worries, relationships, sexual identity, illness, getting over abuse, depression, mental and physical illness, and loneliness. Here’s more about the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline:

  • You are not alone in reaching out. Since launching in 2022, the Lifeline received 10.8 million calls, chats, and texts.
  • The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is a network of more than 200 state and local call centers supported by HHS through SAMHSA.
  • Calls to the Lifeline are routed to the nearest crisis center for connections to local resources for help.
  • Responders are trained counselors who have stopped over 90 percent of suicide attempts.

If you or someone you love is struggling with decreased mental wellness or suicidal thoughts, here are some steps you can take:

Call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline to talk to a caring professional.

Ask them if they are thinking about killing themselves. This will not put the idea into their head or make it more likely that they will attempt suicide

Listen without judging and show you care.

Stay with the person or make sure the person is in a private, secure place with another caring person until you can get further help.

Remove any objects that could be used in a suicide attempt.
