Wicomico County Health Department and Maryland Department of the Environment  Investigating Groundwater Contamination - Updated 11/13/2012

The Wicomico County Health Department is currently working with the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) to investigate the presence of trichloroethene (TCE) detected in local groundwater.  TCE is a chlorinated hydrocarbon commonly used as an industrial solvent. It is a clear nonflammable liquid with a sweet smell.

This chemical has been detected in some private wells in the Morris Mill Road area.  The affected area also consists of the Morris Mill subdivision, the Coulbourne Woods Subdivision, portions of Anthony Lane and portions of Coulbourn Mill Road.

The Health Department has collected water samples from 113 private wells and is partnering with MDE to collect additional samples. Residences most affected have been individually notified and are being provided with a supply of bottled water until a long term solution is identified.

Residents are encouraged to contact the Wicomico County Health Department at 410-546-4446 if they have additional questions.
