Instructions For Using Nicotine Patch

What is the nicotine patch?

It is a small nicotine containing patch that adheres to your skin. The nicotine passes through your skin into your bloodstream. The nicotine in the patch helps to reduce nicotine withdrawal symptoms such as cravings, nervousness, and irritability. It looks like a band-aid.

How to use the nicotine patch:

  • It is best to stop smoking completely when you begin using the patches. Even after the patch is removed, the nicotine in your skin will still be entering your bloodstream for several hours.
  • Read and follow all package instructions.
  • Use only one patch each day.
  • Gradually step down the dosage as directed by your doctor and the health department staff.

How to apply?

  1. Choose a clean, hairless, dry area of the upper body. Make sure the skin is not oily, burned, broken out, or irritated. Change the site each day and do not reuse the same site for one week.
  2. Carefully open the pouch and remove the patch. Immediately, apply the sticky side of the patch to the skin. Make sure edges are smooth and flat.
  3. Wash hands with soap and water.

Getting patch wet:

Water will not harm the patch. Bathe, swim, shower, or use a hot tub as usual.

Disposing of the nicotine patch:

  • Removal of patch prior to bedtime is recommended. Many users report vivid, unpleasant dreams when wearing patches to bed.
  • Fold used patch in half with sticky side together. Place it in the pouch that it came in and throw it in the trash can away from children and pets.
  • WARNING: THE NICOTINE ON THE PATCH IS TOXIC AND CAN CAUSE SERIOUS ILLNESS IN CHILDREN AND PETS.

Storage of nicotine patches:

Keep the patch in its protective pouch until ready to use. Store patches in a dry place below 86°F as they are heat sensitive. Store them up and away from children and pets.

Skin Reactions:

  • Mild itching, burning, or tingling may be felt when the patch is first applied. This should go away within the hour.
  • After removal, the area of skin may be somewhat red. This should disappear within one day.
  • If the area under the patch is swollen, very red, or develops a rash, call your doctor and discontinue use. You may be allergic to one of the components of the patch.
