Strengthen Families Program

The Strengthening Families Program developed for parents and youth is a video-based intervention designed to reduce adolescent substance use and other problematic behaviors in youth 10 to 14 years of age. The program is delivered within parent, youth and family sessions using narrated videos that portray typical youth and parent situations. The sessions are highly interactive and include role playing, discussions, learning games and family projects designed to: improve parenting skills (effective discipline, learn nurturing skills that support their youth). The program builds life skills in youth (dealing with stress and peer pressure: pressure to use drugs, alcohol, tobacco, and engage in problematic behaviors such as shoplifting, skipping school and violence). Youth sessions also focus on strengthening goal setting, communication skills, increasing responsible behavior and strengthening family bonds.

Program is conducted for 2.5 hours, starting with the family meal which lasts for one half hour, after the family meal the parents and youth meet in separate groups for one hour. The last hour is the family session where the youth and parents/ caregivers come together and engage in activities that foster togetherness and open communication.
